From a paper pattern to a bag you can build at home.
KOVERT Continuity 18 didn’t start out with a vision or roadmap, but started out as a side project in the quest to find the perfect bag for my use case.
I already operated an apparel manufacturing unit, which frequently involved tons of local, regional and international travels. And given the hassle and uncertain nature of my travel, most of the bags that I owned were an excellent carry system with good capacity, but weren’t built to be utilitarian or flexible.
Hence I needed one bag that was flexible enough to be used in multiple situations while being simple, cheaper and durable. Most bags achieved such functionality and flexibility through modularity or cosmetic reset of the straps, thus making it inadequate.
Example:-
A 5L Sling Bag with a 4L expansion capacity achieves capacity but defeat the purpose of the Sling Bag which is for lighter carry.
A multiple mode bag with adjustable straps achieves multiple carry mode but fails in pure mode context capacity and functionality.
So I started out by building a 75L Luggage capacity bag which transitioned into a 15 inch laptop bag with 15L capacity.
Initial Prototype
I then experimented by adding trekking features in the bag which I thought would look cool. 

Adding trekking functionalities and features in the bag also added weight and complexities making it impressively functional but practically inconvenient. But since I liked the usefulness of the bag, I went on to build the next iteration of the same bag with fewer complexities and 35L capacity.
This particular version weighed around 1.4kg and was sufficiently flexible and capable.
I tested this version of the bag in every possible scenarios and circumstances; and I liked how convenient it was to use, albeit it being ergonomically lacking in the trekking mode. Trekking bags are designed to be super ergonomic, and that same ergonomic principle couldn’t be cleanly executed in this bag, for it added weight and complexities within the framework of how this bag functioned.
This version of the bag was ideal for short trekking, but there were already bags that excelled for such use case.
I carried this bag extensively from trekking to safari trips.
The Sling Bag was too big for sling mode and too small for a laptop bag. I personally didn’t find the aesthetic too appealing, which is why I started tinkering on the materials and visual layout of the bag.
I decided to venture into a new direction with the same bag:
Redesign the same bag into a smaller capacity. A 2.5L Sling Mode that transitioned into a 14L Roll Top Backpack Mode.
The new design was loved by almost everyone and I managed to sell decent quantity, all through personal orders. The new version offered convenience, flexibility and stealth which proved to super useful during my India travel.

After using the bag for years and selling couple of hundred units, I started stripping away all the additional steps and friction points based on user activities. Thus ending up with a simpler, flexible and a very practical bag which behaves like a utility tool.
A bag you can carry anywhere:
- Daily Carry
- Work/Commute
- Travel/ Airports
- City Use
- Minimal + Stealth Mode
The current version is visually quiet on the outside but functional on the inside.
A bag might look good in theory, but pattern is what reveals everything. If the pattern is wrong, the bag is wrong.
Designing this bag was never one shot. It was consistent iterations, which finally lent significance to the bag. These differences aren’t felt or experienced in a sketch. You only see it when you build it, test it and rebuild it. And that’s how the KOVERT Continuity 18 came to life.
Why I decided to release the pattern
I’m releasing the Continuity 18 pattern because:
- DIY culture is growing
- people want to understand how things are made
- makers deserve access to high-quality designs
- and I believe in building a community around the craft
